Why is Emotional Health Important?

It's time we and the medical profession recognised that our Emotional Health is as important as our Physical Health.

Why?  The truth is that all emotional experience affects our health, whether positive or negative, and whether it occurs in the past or the present. But negative experiences appear to have more lasting health effects, perhaps because we don’t deal with them.

Our language is filled with expressions of how emotion affects the body: tension and stress gives me a knot or butterflies in my stomach, overwhelming sadness makes me feel all choked up, a difficult person is a pain in the neck.

Medical research has recently discovered that unresolved emotional issues have been shown to contribute to an increase in blood pressure, weight issues and lowered immune system.  Many diseases including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s are also known to evolve from unresolved emotional issues.

It may come as no surprise to learn that sudden emotional shock can cause heart attacks even in healthy people. Otherwise known as a  “broken heart”,  these heart attacks were related to the loss of a loved one, fear of an event or activity, or sudden accidents. Notably, most of the sufferers were women.

Recent studies have also discovered a link between negative childhood experiences and habits such as excessive drinking, smoking, eating and sexual promiscuity. The belief is that these substances “tranquilise” negative feelings.  However these addictions soon cause destruction to the body.  In many instances, the individual doesn’t even know what’s causing the addictive behaviour.
